Ending Support for Internet Explorer

We want to make sure all CareApp users have the best possible experience, whether they are accessing CareApp on phones and tablets, or the web. For that reason, we will be ending support for Internet Explorer in 2021. IE users are encouraged to switch to a modern browser to ensure the best CareApp experience.

This post outlines our reasons for ending support, our timeline, and what you need to do.

What do I need to do?

Unless you use Internet Explorer, you don’t need to do anything. Internet Explorer accounts for less than 2% of visitors to CareApp. For the majority of users, no change is required.

If you use Internet Explorer, we recommend switching to a modern web browser. We recommend Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari on MacOS. You probably already have one of these browsers installed.

Why?

Internet Explorer was replaced by Microsoft Edge in 2015. While IE has seen no updates since 2015, modern web browsers have marched on. IE has security issues, bugs, and does not support modern web technologies that are critical for a high quality experience.

  • CareApp features, such as Video Chat, depend on technologies that do not exist in IE.
  • IE’s Javascript performance lags behind other browsers, degrading the experience for users.
  • Modern web development tools and techniques do not work in Internet Explorer.
  • Supporting IE requires complicated workarounds that are difficult to maintain, and can cause problems for all CareApp users, not only those using IE.

Many of the most popular websites have already stopped supporting IE. Microsoft themselves are dropping IE support in their Office365 products this year, with all support ending in 2021.

By dropping IE support, we can focus on delivering the best possible CareApp experience to all our users.

Timeline

We are announcing today that IE support will end on January 1, 2021. This gives 3 months for our users to manage the transition.

October 1, 2020

Starting October, CareApp will show a message to IE users letting them know about the change.

November 14, 2020

In November, we will begin alerting IE users that they need to switch to a modern web browser. Users will continue to be able to use IE.

January 1, 2020

We will begin stopping IE users from accessing CareApp, with suggestions of other browsers.

After January 1, our development team will be able to begin removing workarounds for IE, and focus on delivering the best possible experience for all our users.
