Allison Nikula, Founder and CEO, describes CareApp as being the result of a beautiful accident when her professional and personal lives came together.
Like 1.3 million other older Australians, Allison’s grandparents needed a little extra support to stay at home. Allison’s family wanted to be active contributors to their care, but communication was fragmented and visibility about their care and wellbeing was poor. At the same time, Allison was leading a team of over 440 community care workers and saw that her personal experience was not unique. Knowing beautiful moments were happening every day in aged care, but not being shared, Allison wondered whether technology could play a role in solving this problem and provide families with the much needed personalised and reassuring window into the care and wellbeing of their loved ones.
In 2017, Allison consulted with prospective users with nothing more than some sketches on a piece of paper and some wireframe mock-ups. A proof of concept was created and tested before a minimum viable product was developed and launched in March 2018.
Today CareApp is a nationally awarded and internationally recognised communication platform used across more than 130 facilities and community care providers throughout Australia.
On Sunday 15 March 2020, Allison anticipated that the aged care community would be hugely impact by the global COVID-19 pandemic. It was early days, but she had started to see stories overseas come to light where family members were being either turned away or restricted from seeing their loved ones. She found this was heartbreaking and rang her team. Together they met on Sunday evening and made the decision to offer CareApp for free to all aged care facilities to do our bit to help in this unprecedented crisis.
CareApp is a powerful communication and engagement platform for aged care providers. By sharing photos, video/audio, as well as notices, events, and newsletters, CareApp provides a personalised and reassuring window into the care and wellbeing of loved ones in a similar way to schools and childcare providers that use parental communication apps for keeping up to date.
We’re extremely hopeful that even more aged care facilities will take up our offer of free access to CareApp enabling facilities to utilise our technology to showcase that great moments are continuing to happen every day whilst ensuring that families stay connected to their love ones during this difficult time.
